O Worship the King – April 2018

God be praised! Jesus is risen! Death could not hold Him. Christ has triumphed over sin and proven He is who He said He was. He wasn’t the conquering King that they were expecting. He was so much more. Can you imagine the depth of sorrow, fear and despair the friends of Jesus were feeling for those few dark days without their Lord? Dumbfounded with grief as they watched His lifeless body buried in the tomb… Then that Sunday morning an unexpected light shone. Did they dare hope? Was that what Jesus had meant? And then as Jesus Himself shows up, reveals to His people what the Scriptures said about Him, and the truth unfolds before their eyes, can you imagine the worship that ensued? We’re not told the intimate details in the gospels but it’s not hard to imagine how they must have sung and worshipped their Maker, Redeemer and Friend! And notice that Jesus does not rebuke them for their worship (Matt 28). He accepts it! From everlasting to everlasting He is God and the King over all creation! Oh that time of worship. Can you imagine those blessed hours? We too must respond to the risen Christ in adoration and praise. This month’s hymn, “O Worship the King” is built on the themes of Psalm 104. In it, the author, Robert Grant (1779-1838), praises God for His power and His sovereign authority over all creation and contrasts that power with our frailty and need for mercy. I pray it will be a blessing to our souls to work through this great hymn line by line and let its truths penetrate our hearts.
